
HE PEOPLE OF AKUAPEM CELEBRATED COCOA HERITAGE FESTIVAL TO HONOUR TETTEH QUARSHIE
Mampong Traditional Council at the auspices of Akuapem North Municipal Assembly on wednesday 3rd January ,2024 held a grand durbar for traditional chiefs and people of Akuapem Mampong to celebrate cocoa heritage festival to honour Tetteh Quarshie who first brought cocoa to the area and Ghana. The festival was the first of its kind and celebrated under the theme: “Celebrating the Golden Bean: Cocoa’s Legacy and Future in Ghana”.
In the 19th century, Tetteh Quashie had spent some time at Fernando po now Equatorial Guinea, where cocoa was being cultivated, he eventually smuggled few pods to Ghana in 1876.
. He then planted the beans in Akuapem region of Ghana where the crop thrives. Tetteh Quarshie’s exploit in cultivating cocoa played no mean a role in the establishment of cocoa industry in Ghana. The country at a point in time became the leading producer of cocoa in the world.
